The Art of Layered Hair

Any length of hair can be layered. Often times, it’s done to add depth and interest to the hair style. It’s conceived as being different, and a fresh look that can set you apart from others. Hair needing volume can benefit from layers, and hair needing the look of additional length can appear to be longer with the right layering techniques. An excellent haircut should accentuate your bone structure and overall shape of your face. One that makes the face appear rounder is the goal. Once you choose to try a layered look, realize it will take a bit of practice to style your new hair. Watch your stylist closely and ask questions as she is finishing your hairstyle.

There are so many different ways to layer the hair that the first consideration is length. Once you know if you will be going longer or shorter or trimming to prepare for a new style, you can then plan your style. Take into consideration the shape of your face. If you have sharp features that you wish to soften, then a layered bob with a fringe edge may be for you. If you want to go for a bold chunky look, then an angular cut with layers might be what you choose. If you see a picture of what you like, do not hesitate to take it to your stylist. If you have a friend whose hair you admire and can find out the stylist location, consider going to the very stylist whom crafted the cut you like. There’s no shame in obtaining the look you wish for. Just be very complimentary and sincere to those who have the information you need!

Layers work with bangs and curls. There is nothing limiting when it comes to layers. Quite often, your stylist may suggest freshening up your color or adding streaks and highlights to the layers to create a dramatic look. If you wish to blend your layers into your style, there are color patterns that do just that! The following are basic steps to style your newly layered hair. You will tweak and perfect these steps as you get comfortable in working with your layers, so enjoy the learning process.

Step 1: Begin by straightening your layers. Dry your damp hair with a blow dryer and a round brush. Straighten your layers out by running the brush through your hair and directing the warm air downward, following the brush. Always brush downward and complete the stroke, removing the brush from the hair as you continue to style each layered strand.

Step 2: As you reach the end of each strand, roll the hair ends a bit under with your brush. This will ensure all hair is laying in one direction at this point of the process. Once hair is dry, run a pick or a comb through the sections to separate the layers, and then spray into place.

It’s easy to create a carefree, fun look just for you!
